John Henry Johnson Selected Black & White Photographs 1967-1979

John Henry Johnson Selected Black & White Photographs 1967-1979 includes two hundred of my creative Black & White photographs. My book is composed of the following: first an introduction (pages 1-9), next is an overview of the Zone System photographic technique (pages 10 – 13), the bulk of the book are 5 sections of 40 photographs each followed by 2 pages of technical and aesthetic notes on the photographs. (pages 14 – 221), lastly, is a chronology of my life and work in photography and film (pages 222 – 231). Page 232 is about my “Film Photography Courses” series of eBooks. The introduction covers my initial interests in photography and filmmaking which continues through my early years of learning photography and filmmaking and then educated at Southern Colorado State College, Rochester Institute of Technology for my Bachelor of Fine Arts degree and finally at Cranbrook Academy of Art where I received my Master of Fine Arts degree. Initially trained to be a New York Illustration photographer my goals changed and I went further into fine art photography and university teaching. Along the way encountering many of the world’s great photographers (i.e. Ansel Adams, Minor White, etc.) At RIT I learned the exquisite, demanding technique of pre-visualizing an image before exposure known as the “Zone System” which is the book’s next section. The technique allows a photographer to predetermine the exact darkest tone and its lightest tone, which both contain texture and detail so as to express an aesthetic rendering required for the subject. Most of the book are the large photographs broken into 5 sections each, which is followed by two pages of technical and aesthetic notes. What the photographs are, how they were made and my feelings about the images and flastly, how the images were exhibited or published and in whose collections they are in. The chronology recounts my years in learning, teaching, photographing and filmmaking. It includes notable small images from various periods and my correspondence with significant fine art photographers. John Henry Johnson
