After Lucifer's death and the cremation of his body, Queen Lucinda assumes control of Hell, ordering her ram-horned, black-winged soldiers to implement intense training in preparation for the battle of Annihilation, also known as the Red War between Heaven and Hell. Hungry for more power, she devours the souls of gifted, demonic beings, acquiring their extraordinary abilities and using them to destroy her perceived political enemies.
The Black Crows meet secretly with the Knights of Darkness in their hidden headquarters, plotting against Lucinda in their efforts to maintain peace and the balance of power. While consumed by hatred over Crighton’s unrequited love, Lucinda is unaware of their activities and that Lucifer's spirit has returned to Hell inside the body of a soul-trapped demon.
Determined to reclaim his throne, Lucifer severely punishes his daughter and restricts her movements. However, his obsession with Samara, Crighton’s beautiful daughter, leaves him frustrated with his newly-acquired body and his authoritarian rule over the inhabitants of Hell. An insurgency breaks out on Earth and the sentencing of prisoners are delayed. Lucifer becomes distracted long enough for his new queen to be kidnapped by Nexus rebel forces, anxious to confirm her Phoenix Prophecy identity and to end any possibility of Lucifer’s universal control.
